Northern Ireland Police are conducting enquiries after video footage showing a violent confrontation between an adult man and a group of teenagers in Belfast went viral on social media, with the incident reportedly sparked by youths attacking a vehicle near Shankill Road.
The force confirmed officers received multiple reports of anti-social behaviour and assaults in the area on Tuesday evening, with investigations ongoing into the mass brawl captured on camera.
“Police are conducting enquiries into a number of reports of anti-social behaviour and assaults in the Shankill Road area of Belfast on Tuesday 7th April. Enquiries into the matter are currently ongoing,” a spokesperson stated.
The widely-shared footage shows a grey t-shirt and black cap-wearing man—believed to be a passenger—repeatedly exiting his vehicle to chase down teenagers following what viewers claim were provocative attacks on his car.
Witnesses claim the initial altercation began when youths surrounded the stationary vehicle whilst appearing to throw objects at it, with tense exchanges occurring between the youngsters and the car’s occupants before the situation escalated violently.
The man can be seen sprinting towards teenagers on three separate occasions during the incident, with a female companion attempting to usher him back to their vehicle between confrontations.

Each return to the car proved temporary, with further apparent projectiles thrown at the vehicle reigniting the feud and prompting additional chases down Belfast streets.
The footage culminates in what appears to be the man throwing punches towards retreating youths during a mass brawl, with some teenagers attempting to push him away whilst shouting echoed in the distance.
Social media viewers debated the incident’s context, with some arguing the youths provoked the violence through their alleged vehicle attacks whilst others condemned the adult’s physical response against minors.

The viral nature of the footage has intensified pressure on Northern Ireland Police to thoroughly investigate the Tuesday evening altercation, with questions surrounding whether criminal charges will be filed against participants.
The incident follows another viral confrontation captured in south London where a Land Rover driver rammed an alleged machete-wielding motorbike thief outside a Brixton Sainsbury’s, demonstrating increasing prevalence of vigilante-style responses to perceived criminality being shared across social platforms.

Authorities have not disclosed whether arrests have been made or if the investigation will examine both the alleged initial vehicle attacks and the subsequent physical altercation separately.
