Britney Spears spent the night in custody after being arrested by highway patrol officers in California on Wednesday evening, with her representative describing the incident as “completely inexcusable” and calling for it to mark the beginning of a significant change in the pop star’s life.
According to records from the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office, Spears was detained at 9.28pm and released at 6.07am the following morning. She has been scheduled to appear in court on 4 May. Various US media outlets reported the arrest was made on suspicion of driving under the influence.
Ventura County, situated to the north of Los Angeles, is a largely affluent area home to a significant number of celebrities.
In a statement issued after news of the arrest became public, her representative said: “This was an unfortunate incident that is completely inexcusable. Britney is going to take the right steps and comply with the law and hopefully this can be the first step in long overdue change that needs to occur in Britney’s life. Hopefully, she can get the help and support she needs during this difficult time.”
The statement added that her sons would be spending time with her and that those close to her intended to put a plan in place to support her wellbeing. “Her loved ones are going to come up with an overdue needed plan to set her up for success for well-being,” the representative said.
The arrest comes at a notable moment for Spears professionally. Despite having been musically inactive for a number of years — with no album released in over a decade — the singer reportedly signed a major deal last month to sell the rights to her back catalogue. Sources told TMZ the agreement was in a similar range to the $200 million deal struck by Justin Bieber when he sold his own catalogue, though the precise terms have not been confirmed. Such arrangements typically allow a purchasing company to license music for use in advertising, film, television and gaming.
Spears remains one of the most recognisable names in pop music, with songs including Toxic and Baby One More Time continuing to attract widespread attention. She successfully fought a lengthy legal battle in 2021 to end the conservatorship that had allowed her father to control her personal freedom and finances.
Her court appearance is scheduled for 4 May.
