Metropolitan Police have detained three suspects including two minors following a fatal shooting in Woolwich that claimed the life of a 14-year-old boy, with investigators appealing for witnesses to come forward as they work to establish the circumstances surrounding the killing.
Detective Chief Inspector Lucie Card, who is leading the murder investigation, confirmed officers made the arrests on Thursday with all three individuals—boys aged 14 and 16 alongside an 18-year-old man—remaining in custody on Friday.
The fatal shooting occurred in Woolwich, south-east London, with authorities maintaining an enhanced visible policing presence across the area as the investigation progresses at pace.
DCI Card stated: “Our thoughts remain with the boy’s family and loved ones. We are aware of the concern that this incident will cause the local community. We have already made three arrests and our investigation continues at pace. An increased police presence remains in the area.”
Investigators are urgently seeking assistance from members of the public who may possess information crucial to piecing together events leading to the teenager’s death, with particular emphasis on obtaining visual evidence from the timeframe surrounding the incident.
“I would appeal for anyone who was in the area at the time, who has CCTV or dash cam footage of the incident or has information that could help my officers to come forward,” DCI Card added.
The Metropolitan Police have not released the victim’s identity pending formal notification procedures, nor have they disclosed the specific location within Woolwich where the shooting took place or the time the incident occurred.
The arrest of suspects including individuals as young as 14 highlights the ongoing challenge of youth violence in the capital, with firearms incidents involving minors remaining a persistent concern for law enforcement and community leaders alike.
Officers are working to determine the motive behind the fatal attack and whether the victim knew his assailants, with the swift arrests suggesting investigators may have been able to identify suspects through witness accounts or surveillance footage shortly after the shooting.
Anyone with information is urged to contact the Metropolitan Police or Crimestoppers anonymously as detectives work to build a comprehensive picture of the circumstances that led to the teenager’s death.
