Biden cautions China is going to ‘eat our lunch’ if U.S. does not get

WASHINGTON– President Joe Biden cautioned legislators Thursday that China is strongly surpassing the United States on infrastructure.

” They’re investing a great deal of money, they’re investing billions of dollars and dealing with a whole series of issues that relate to transportation, the environment and an entire range of other things,” Biden stated he told a bipartisan group of senators whom he met in the Oval Workplace.

” They have a major, major new effort on rail and they already have rail that goes 225 miles an hour with ease,” he discussed, including that he talked with Chinese President Xi Jinping for two hours on Wednesday. “They’re going to, you know, if we do not get moving, they’re going to consume our lunch,” Biden said after the conference with the members of the Environment and Public Works committee.

” We simply have to step up. Therefore what I ‘d like to speak with these folks about– given that they are the crucial committee– is how we start this. I have actually set out what I think we must be doing,” the president included.

The phone call with Xi and the conference with lawmakers come as the brand-new U.S. administration works to address human rights abuses and repair trade relations with the world’s second-largest economy.

Recently throughout an address at the State Department Biden said that he would work more closely with allies in order to mount pushback versus Beijing.

” We will challenge China’s economic abuses,” Biden said, explaining Beijing as America’s “most serious competitor.”

The stress between Beijing and Washington, the world’s two largest economies, skyrocketed under the Trump administration, which escalated a trade war and worked to prohibit Chinese innovation business from doing business in the U.S

. In an interview with CBS, Biden said that his administration is prepared for “extreme competitors” with China however that his approach would be different from his predecessor’s.

“I’m not going to do it the method Trump did. We are going to focus on the international guidelines of the roadway,” Biden stated Sunday.

After his remarks at the Pentagon on Wednesday, a reporter asked Biden whether he had any interest in penalizing China over the country’s lack of transparency about the Covid-19 outbreak in 2015.

“I have an interest in getting all the realities,” Biden stated, according to a pool report.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken talked for the very first time with his Chinese equivalent, Yang Jiechi, over the weekend.

In a tense call, Blinken informed Yang the U.S. would hold China to represent a multitude of problems including human rights abuses.

Blinken also called on Beijing to condemn the current military coup in Myanmar.
